Marvel Comics X Men Rip-off? By Acheron, (DT) April 16, 2001 6:58 AM PT |

(E!) 20th Century Fox claims that a new live action TV produced by Marvel Comics, called Mutant X, is virtually identical to the X Men movie, and could jeopardize the success of the upcoming sequels. ?Fox filed a lawsuit on Tuesday.
Marvel Comics then counter sued (minutes later) stating that the series is legitimate, and that it doesn't create unfair competition. ?The characters and premise are completely different, Marvel claims. The company also says it can't be found to be infringing its own trademarks. Fox, however, put in its 1993 contract with Marvel that the comic book company would never create a similar live action series without Fox's permission. ?Also, according to Fox, Marvel has been using the success of the movie to promote Mutant X. Though Marvel tirelessly claims that the two shows characters and plots are completely different, similarities are more than noticeable. ?Both properties focus on mutants out to save their genetic brethren from the sinister government forces. Both groups possess super powers to fight for good. And both use the "X" moniker, that symbolizes "mutant superhero" to any seasoned comic geek. It sounds like a very sticky situation that the two are going to have to work out. ?Its a shame that the original franchise could be lessened by a rip-off, but it could very well happen. ?I hope it doesn't put a damper on the upcoming sequels. |
