Columbia signs on with Square for more 3-D

From the latest report of Variety, Columbia Pictures has agreed to co-finance the next three movies from Japanese gamemaker Square's U.S. film production company. Columbia and Square Pictures are currently producing Final Fantasy, a computer-animated movie based on Square's video game series. And as most Final Fantasy fans already know, the story is very loosely tied to the video games.

Square Soft?s Hawaiian studio is working on the animation project, using advanced animation software for photorealistic characters. As a brief synopsis, the movie takes place in the year 2065 when an alien race tries to take over Earth. Alright, so that was rather brief and typical of SciFi flicks, but I hope they pull this one off real good.

Square said that it would use the technology developed in making Final Fantasy in the three movies it co-produces with Columbia, which will be 100 percent computer-generated. Final Fantasy is slated to premiere next summer, and has a lot to gain by being the first out the door as the first ever full 3D action adventure for an older audience. Hopefully, this movie will be more than just something conceptual, in reference to Fox's disappointing Titan A.E.
