Uncle Boonmee was suffering from kidney failure, and sees his life running on the low end. He decided that if he was to die later, he would like it on the countryside, to be beside his loved ones. Along the way, the spirit of his departed wife comes to visit him, along with his estranged son who also returns, but in the form of a jungle spirit.

Together, they would make the final journey towards a hilltop cave where everything originally started.
