Dogs and barking are inseparable. Barking dog can be a menace at times. Dogs bark to call, make the owners alert about suspicious things, or just like that. Sometimes the intense barking habits can make people feel irritated. If such is the situation then here are things you should never do, such as,

-Never encourage the dog to bark at people passing by your door. Or trigger barking by enquiring who's at the door. The querying tone would stimulate the dog's curiosity and it will start barking. This is very important for countering the barking dog problem.

-Never shout at barking dogs or if you shout once then remember you have to always shout. It will encourage the dog to distinguish between the events, when you shout and when you don't. A barking dog would definitely continue or start barking at the things or sounds for which you never alerted the dog.

-Never punish a barking dog. It might increase the dog's anxiety even more and it will continue barking. It will be far better if you consult a veterinary behaviorist in order to get proper instructions about solving barking problems.

-Never use a muzzle to stop your barking dog, it's really cruel. Dogs regulate their body temperature by panting and with the muzzle they cannot do that, neither can they eat or drink.

Barking dog problem - Training Options

To begin with you need to remove all things that might stimulate your dog to bark. Stop all access to the doors or the windows. The barking dog will stop doing it. You can mask the outside noises that might trigger barking with some music or just by switching the television on.

The sound of the doorbell should be changed in order to distract the attention of the barking dog from the door. When the dog is barking constantly call it inside. This distraction helps to stop the barking.

To stop a barking dog effectively you should allow few barks then command to be quite, not loudly but firmly. Go to him, holding the muzzle, repeat the command in a calm, low but firm voice. Make him sit down.

If this method does not work well add few startling noises to distract the barking dog, such as, can of coins, loud single clap, or a bell. This should definitely divert the attention of the dog towards what you are saying. If the dog starts barking again, repeat the steps.
