Resettlement records are public records of people who have immigrated to the USA. These records can date back to 1800s and are a great source of genealogy information.

Resettlement records are often called immigration public records, passenger arrival records or land border entry records. These records are stored and managed by the National Archive and anyone looking for copes of resettlement records can start their search there. Although the National Archive hold a huge number of records, information about people arrived in the U.S before 1820s may be hard to find. Passenger lists were not required at this time so ship captains often didn't bother to prepare them. However there are other sources of information that can help you in case you are looking for records from this time period.

How to search for resettlement records?

The best way to start a search for resettlement records is via the Internet. Some public record databases can provide resettlement records and all you need to do in order to search for them is to know the name of the person whose records you want to view. In case the records you are after cannot be found online, you will need to expand your search to the National Archive. A search in the archives can take quite some time and this is why you will need to know more information about the person and their arrival in the USA - name, when and where they have arrived.

If the records you need are not available at the National Archive, you can check some very comprehensive registries and bibliographies dedicated to genealogy. They are written by various authors but all can provide helpful information in case resettlement records cannot be found at official government authorities.
