Where to search for brigade and cavalry records?

Brigade records and cavalry records can be obtained by the National Archives. The National Archive holds the largest database of US cavalry records. Another place where you can look for these records is The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC).

If you need to get a copy of any brigade or cavalry record you have to file an official request. The ways to submit your request differs at the National Archives and at the NPRC. If you want to submit a request for receiving copies of cavalry or brigade military record from the National Archive, you will have to complete DD form 214, while requesting copies of records from the NPRC is done by submitting a SF 180. The response time varies according to the type of records requested and the information you have provided in the request forms.
