The history of marriage records.

Today we can find and read any marriage record or county marriage records online. A simple search in a public record database provides instantly with tons of information about someone. But what were like marriage records in the past?

The ancestor of today's public marriage records were marriage license application records dating back to 1600's. These were not exactly marriages records but more permission documents for two people to get married. However they contained most of the information found in marriage records today.

Where to find an old marriage public record?

If you are looking to find an old marriage public record - for example your grand parent's public marriage record, you may need to do some extra research in advance. Obviously one option is to find out where they were married, go to the local city hall and file a request to view the records. However there is no guarantee that you will find marriage records this way, especially the old ones.
