3 Ways You Can Rid Yourself of Unwanted Calls

Have you been banging your head against the wall trying everything you can think of - everything you read about online - to end those annoying prank calls, harrassing calls, telemarketing calls, and other unwanted phone calls once and for all - only to see nothing happen, no change whatsoever in the activity? Well here are three effective techniques you may not yet have heard of or tried.


  1. Invoke the TCPA


It may surprise most people - telemarkets included - to learn that there are a number of strict laws on the books to protect consumers from such hassles. These laws restrict the times and manners in which telemarketers can call you. One in particular called the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991 prohibits telemarkets from contacting you any earlier than 8 am or later than 9 pm your time. It also requires all telemarketers to have a printed Do Not Call policy in place and maintain a thorough Do Not Call Registry.


Thanks to the TCPA, once you request that a telemarketer place you on their Do Not Call List, they are required to do so, as they are to mail you a copy of their Do Not Call policy should you ask for it. The penalty for ignoring these mandates is $500 to $1500 for each violation shold you opt to sue them for their transgressions.


So the next time a telemarketer who you've already asked to stop calling you does it again, let them know what law they are violating and exactly what actions you will now be taking against them (whether you actually plan to take any further action against them or not). Just the threat of doing so should be enough to get them off your line for good.


  1. Convince them that you are tracing their phone call


You don't have to actually trace a call to put an unwanted caller on alert; all you really have to do is convince them that you are doing that.


Phone companies log and trace calls all the time - from prank calls to threatening calls, and more - delivering their information to the police who then visit the transgressors at their homes and read them the riot act. All you have to do to make it seem like you are tracing an unwanted callers phone call is to say, "Officer, this is the phone call. Begin the trace" or simply inform the person on the other end of the phone that you are now tracing their call and will report their number to the police.


Most people won't stick around on the other end of the line to call your bluff, even if they suspect that you're bluffing, as the risk for them is just too high.


  1. Return the "favor"Block Unwanted Calls


Thanks to the advent of free reverse phone directories and paid reverse phone lookups, you can now track even those unwanted callers who have their numbers blocked and/or are calling from cell phones.


There are numerous such services on the internet and any good one will produce for you the name and address associated with any phone number you input. If a number is blocked, you can order "Anonymous Call Rejection" from your phone company, which redirects incoming calls from blocked numbers to an outgoing announcement that your number does not accept such calls and, should the caller wish to reach you, they must first unblock their number.


Then, when they call back with their number appearing on your Caller ID, you can then look it up using any of these online reverse phone lookup services and take action against the perpetrator.
