Playstation 3 red light flashes is actually a problem with the hard drive. While it is possible that the hard drive may have malfunctioned permanently, there's still a big chance that it can be made to work normally again.

When your PS3 flashes yellow light, here's what you can do: Shutdown the PS3 console. Remove the hard drive by detattaching it from the main unit. After a few seconds, connect it back again, making sure you connect it the same way as it is before.

After you connect the hard drive back, turn the PS3 back on. If your hard drive is still functional, it should boot normally and you will be able to play it again. A large percentage of situation wherein playstation 3 flashes red are fixed using this method.
