It is tasked with maintaining all records of criminals and crimes and making it available and accessible to authorized viewers. These viewers maybe local enforcement agencies, officials of the federal or state, and members of justice departments.

Information provided by NCIC is very comprehensive as far as criminal records are concerned. This is a good source of data that can be used for reference on a civilian's track record in the community.

The main purpose why people would seek access to NCIC is to make a background check on criminal records as well as criminal history. The computerized system is being maintained by the Criminal Justice Information Services Division of the FBI.
