Avatar is a futuristic film set during the 22nd century on a small moon called Pandora. Pondora is rich in valuable minerals and is inhabited by extraterrestial beings known as the Navi, ten foot humanoids which are more capable than humans, but generally peaceful. A paralyzed Marine named Jake Sully is sent to Pandora on a scout mission. Jake controls an avatar, genetically engineered human/Navi hybrids that are controlled mentally by humans, who cannot breath Pandora's air. There she meets a young Navi female, Neytiri, and eventually falls in love with her.

Jake gets caught in a conflict between the Navi race and the military forces from Earth who are out to consume Pandora's rich resources.
