Roald Dahl told me that the name is based on a game, rather like frisbee, that he played as a child.
It was known as "Skilly Wonka", tho he had no idea why.

He said the name sounded a bit silly and he liked it, so he changed it to Willy Wonka so that he could use it in his book.

No important meanings to it, he liked the sound of it, and had good memories of the game he played as a child.

I've been living with the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory story for most of my life.
My REAL NAME is Charlie Wonka.

I was a teenager when the book came out so I have first claim to  the name(s).

You fools who giggle because the name reminds you of 'wanker' really ought to try to graduate from your 8th grade mentality.

Mr. Dahl created a number of great characters, and some wonderful stories for us all.
