those of you who think Gene Wilder played the best Willy Wonka, you're right and wrong. Gene Wilder fit the perfect role for a happy willy wonka, but if you ask me or anyone we all know Johnny Depp would fit the role for a wired quirky willy wonka. the 1971 version was an altered version of the book, Burton is doing the Book version it's not that hard to understand. so if you're arguing about whos better as wonka just read this and look at "who'd be better for each of the 2 roles", Gene for a happy wonka, Johnny for a Quirky wonka. Gene wilder was yesterday sadley enough but c'mon Johnny Depp is today, be happy it wasn't anyone like Orlando Bloom or Decaprio playing wonka. Johnny Depp has played more roles than almost anyone is hollywood, from a Notorious Cowboy Criminal to an Astronaut to an unstable pirate. Face it Johnny Depp is todays Willy Wonka and they coulnd't have chosen anyone better to play Wonka.
