The Giger design was amazing...but not functional. Nolan is a top-notch director, and while I have some doubts as to the current batmobile, I know that Nolan has his reasons.  The design isn't that farout when you look at the tank Bats drove in The Dark Knight Returns, and the vehicle he sported in The Cult.  And it certainly is more practical in some respects.  As for Burton, yeah, Burton is the bomb, but he can only give Batman strong screen presence; his vision of Batman is too dependent on German Expressionism, which is why Batman isn't the lean mean fighting machine we expect to see, and which is why we don't really get the whole foregrounding of Batman's detective skills.  In the end, Burton is just fascinated by showing us what a freak Batman is--which is completely understandable (Check out Warren Ellis' Planetary take on Batman to see how anachronistic and obsessively, compulsively, fascist Batman's sense of justice is).  But true Batman fans like yours truly aren't content with atmosphere and style alone.  Granted, we want Bats to look good, but we also want strong character development and great narrative arc to pull us in. Otherwise, Batman becomes another inflated POS, like any other film.  Nolan's smart as a razor; this Batman is gonna blow to hell our past conceptions.
