There's been a lot of admonition to "read your bible" on here (as if that proves anything to anyone) but I would suggest that everyone find a copy of "The Dolorous Passion of Jesus Christ" upon which this movie is actually based.   It was written by a 14th century nun, and recounts her "vision" of the last 12 hours of Yehoshua's life.   I say Yehoshua because that was his name (so maybe people should read their Suetonius and Pliny as well, but I'm not holding my breath.
Here's my problem: If you were living in that area at the time, and you weren't Roman or Greek, you were a brown-skinned person.   The blond, blue-eyed, Italian impostor wasn't commissioned by the vatican until much later, and was painted from an actual Italian male model.    If this is so historically accurate, why is everyone white?   I'll tell you why.  The Nicean Council of 325 CE concerned itself with many things, but the most important was the Europeanization of the church and the centralization of Papal power.   Prior to that, most artistic representations of Yehoshua and his mother were black, with tight corn-rowed hair, and African facial features.   The oldest known painting of him can be found in the catacombs of Rome, and I assure you, he is black.   White Xtians always respond with a "What does it matter, etc." and to them I say, it doesn't matter a whit to me, since I am not a Xtian.  Paint him green, I don't give a shit.  But, please, stop going on and on about the Pope saying "It is as it was."   The Pope has a vested interest in keeping the status quo, always has, and is therefore an unfit arbiter of what is and isn't real or factual.   Also, you need to check out two other things that will smell a bit:
1.   Mel Gibson belongs to the Holy Family sect of Catholicism, which still performs the Mass in Latin, and still holds tight to many documents about the life of Yehoshua that have since been debunked as forgeries and what was officially called "Pious Fraud" at the time.    This sect holds also to a rigid and conservative interpretation of the bible, even claiming that the Canonic Gospels were actually written by the disciples they were named after.   This of course is impossible, since the earlist known Gospel doesn't even appear until the 2nd century CE.
2.  Gibson's father, Hutton Gibson, whom he is studiously loath to reveal or talk about in public, is a notorious antisemite, who has written many books (pamphlets?) about the guilt of the Jews for the death of the savior, and about the illegitimacy of the current Papacy.   After reading this material (not too much, now, it is, after all, complete crap), watch the movie Conspiracy Theory.   It'll make you look at MellyG in a completely new light.
I have no doubt that the plan all along was for Yehoshua to die.   People need symbols, and the almighty knows this, but that begs the question of the culpability of God, not the Jews, who were just people of their time.   He sent me a different symbol, however, in the Buddha, and thank goodness the Euros didn't get their hands on him and turn his life into one allegory after another about suffering.    There is also beauty in the world, and I for one am thankful for it.

I am a former Xtian, and might have stayed one, had other Xtians evolved with the rest of creation, as it was intended.   As it stands, I cannot worship with other Xtians.  I just tagged this on here to let you know that I don't need ministering to, that I am enlightened and happy, and also that I am not a "Christ-baiter."   Anytime, under the auspices of religion and spirituality, any human can find piece, the creator is pleased.  Me too.
