Generally speaking, for those who HAVE read the books, the movies make a lot more sense than for those who HAVEN'T.  A lot of things that fans of the books know about and already understand go unexplained in the movie. (such as the Palantir)

I loved the movies on the whole although I was very dissappointed with The Two Towers (particularily the way Faramir's character was mutilated and the way the Ent moot was f-d up)

I would have enjoyed seeing more in the fims but it would have required making 6 movies instead of 3 but then a lot of the beauty of the book would translate very dryly to film I think.

I certainly have issues with some of the changes that were made .. I do believe the films could have been done somewhat better.  That being said, I have the first two Extended Editions and am eagerly waiting the last.  

The Return of the King was definitely the best film of the three for me.
