I brought my wife, who is not a fantasy fan and hasn't read the books, and my son to the ROTK tonight. They, and I were awed. Can I just say that if this movie doesn't completely rule at the Oscars then there is something truly wrong with the ranking system. Every face I watched was rapt with emotion. This movie was truly powerful and accomplished it with out being completely sappy or unrealistic. As far as trying to capture the books, you can't. So enjoy reading them. But as book to movie translations go, this was as well done as anything you could compare it to.
