A while ago somewhere on the internet.. somebody slipped up and let the secret out re: the storyline for ID2.  I've looked for it since and it looks like they found the booboo and got rid of it.  Anyway, you're not too far off.  They DO actually go to the aliens' planet (whether or not they take an alien ship there is questionable - good premise though) and, from the sounds of it, much the same occurs as in ID 1 after that.  I also heard (through my own personal grapevine) that ALL stars return to the sequel - although it hasn't been  made public yet.  Expect this flick in theatres in 2005.
