Topic: News Michal Bay to Redo Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

By Jack on 2002-01-31 12:02:52

(VARIETY) Radar Pictures has greenlit a remake of the horror cult classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" as the first production for Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes banner.
Radar will fully finance, with Good Machine Intl. handling foreign sales. Film is set for a spring start.

The 1974 "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was directed by Tobe Hooper and told the gory tale of five 20-somethings who fall into the clutches of a monstrous clan of Texas cannibals and find themselves being whittled away by the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface. The film spawned three feature sequels, at least two behind-the-scenes documentaries and a Teutonic copycat, "The German Chainsaw Massacre."

Hopper and his original co-writer, Kim Henkel, are penning a draft, but no final decision has been made on the writer or director of the remake.

For now, Bay has shot a three-minute promo for the film that GMI will use as a sales tool at the upcoming American Film Market. CAA will rep the film for a domestic deal.

Michael Fleiss of Next Entertainment will produce. Ted Field of Radar

Pictures and Jeff Allard of Next will executive produce with Bay's Platinum Dunes partners, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller.

Formed last November, Platinum Dunes has a first-look deal with Radar and is devoted to producing lower-budgeted commercial films.

Next is best known as a producer of reality television and is producing "The Bachelor" for ABC. Fleiss also produced several successful reality series, including "Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire" and "Million Dollar Mysteries."

Deal was negotiated by CAA on behalf of both Platinum Dunes and Next. Hooper is repped by the Gersh Agency. David Boyle, executive VP business and legal affairs, represented Radar. GMI was represented by the company's president, David Linde.
