Bottom line... Kevin Smith has something to say and isn't put off by those of us who disagree with him (yes, I, personally, don't often agree with him). The guy makes the movies that he would like to see and I can only assume that most of the resentment toward his films comes from those of us who don't bother to make the films that "we" want to see.

When was the last time you saw anything out of Hollywood that came even close to bearing the personal moniker of its makers? Can you even picture how film execs look at films like Tomb Raider or Pearl Harbor? The rest of us have been asking ourselves for years "Didn't they realize this sucked when they were making it?" The answer: "Yes!" The difference here is that film-makers today know that we'll run like lemmings to a picture just because the marketing tells us to go and could give a damn if a single redeeming moment ever appears on camera. The quality of our experience while watching a Smith film is predicated on our ability to see it as one man's commentary - right or wrong. Agree with him or not. That's the point. Just don't even think about taking kudos away from the guy for trying something that most other film-makers in this country would never have the balls to try - he's taken an overmarketed, low quality, money driven industry and made it a media for exploring areas that deeply mean something to him... Imagine, for a split-second, how much the recent offerings of Hollywood mainstream films could have been improved by a adopting a similar attitude toward film-making. Sure they might not have appealed to everyone. But at least they would have appealed to someone.

Of course, if "Rush Hour 2" speaks to you on a personal level, then I'm barking up the wrong tree...
