If you, for instance, are unfamiliar with Tom Sawyer, Fyodor Karamazov, Ebeneezer Scrooge or Oliver Twist, does that make *you* a dumbass?

No, that simply means you are "ignorant" of the subject at hand. Ignorance is curable through a process known as education, whereas stupidity is an affliction one must bear through life as you should very well know, though are probably blissfully unaware.
