Topic: Film Review: Hannibal

By Acheron on 2001-02-11 14:26:58

Hannibal Lecter has come out of seclusion and has given Clarice Starling, now played by Julianne Moore, another chance to find him and put him away for good.

After keeping a low profile for nearly ten years, Hannibal Lecter's true identity is found out by a detective in Florence, who tries to bring him in and claim the $3 million reward that Lecter has on his head.

After public favor turns against Clarice for botched jobs in the FBI, Dr. Lecter plans to come out of hiding and return to the U.S. and make contact with her, and return to his former lifestyle. ?

Unknown to Lecter, Mason Verger (played by an unrecognizable Gary Oldman), the only surviving victim of Lecter's attacks has revenge on his mind, and plots to return the favor to Lecter.

The story plays out leaving no imagination for the gory acts that occur.

This was probably one of the most disturbing films I've seen in a while - even more so than 8mm or Seven. ?As I walked into the theatre, the aroma of puke filled the air. No kidding. ?That being said, I really enjoyed this movie, but as all sequels go, it doesn't beat out Silence Of The Lambs.

Julianne Moore played the part of Clarice Starling extremely well, and I quickly dismissed the fact Jodie Foster was not in the sequel. ?Anthony Hopkins' performance was flawless, as expected. ?Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) was a welcome face, whom I haven't seen in a movie in a while (yes, I know he's had work).

The cinematography was well done, but I'm at a loss to describe it because I saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon last night, and its magnificent camera work is still fresh in my head. ?The plot was well laid out, and the flow of the movie was smooth. ?It never dragged on with unnecessary details. ?I'm surprised that this sequel was as well written and shot as it was.

Conclusion: 8.0/10.0. ?It's definitely not for the weak of heart and stomach (see above), but if you can handle a little gore, and want a really good story, see this movie. ?It's worth the $8 or whatever you would pay for it in your area.
