All substance and process addictions stimulate the portion of the brain known as the "pleasure center"(I wonder if if this isnt part of what is included when the apostle Paul wrote,"In the last days...men will be.. lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God," 2 Timothy 3:1,2,4.)Since the fall of the Garden of Eden, man has been unusually capable of getting into trouble with his human needs. After all, Eve got into trouble at the "grocery store". While looking for something to eat she came upom the tree God had declared off-limits. She lingered beneath its fruit-laden branches; it seemed such a shame to waste it all. Her mouth began to water. Surely God had created it for a reason. Didnt He give "us richly all things to enjoy" ( 1 Timothy ^:17, kjv)? Before Eve could think further, the serpent offered her just one tasty bite. (cmon we have all been there) Rationalizing away the instruction of the Lord God, she drew a breath and sank her teeth into the fruits savory flesh. Still not recognizing the eternal implications of her action, she turned to her husband who was lingering a short distance away and offered him a bite. Adam, too, chose the succulent morsel. I doubt it was avery big bite and for awhile it seemed not to matter-until they heard the sound of their Divine Companion striding to meet them. What had actually happened to Adam and Eve? Their action hardly seems wicked to a world whwer right and wrong are judged on the basis of harm to others rather than hurt to God. But their God-created appetite sought satisfaction in the forbidden. Since that moment, man has become susceptible to addiction.
