Topic: Film Review: Highlander: Endgame

By Acheron on 2000-09-04 22:44:57

Most people gave this film bad reviews. Knowing this, I didn't go into the movie expecting much, but I was intrested in it because I've been a fan of the series for years now. I know, I know. I'm not a true Highlander fan because I like the series better. Adrian Paul just does a better job in my opinion.

The movie starts off giving a bit of history on Connor Macleod and his connections with his arch nemesis, Jacob Kell. In the current time period, Kell has started breaking the rules of the game, and is killing others on holy ground and in groups. Because of this, the watchers have been taking some of the immortals and hiding them in a sanctuary until Endgame when Kell must be defeated. Kell finds the sanctuary and breaks in to kill the immortals that are there. This is basically when Adrian Paul comes into the story. Then some stuff happens and some people die. That's all I'll spoil.

Here's what I liked about the movie: it had the same feel as the series does - lots of flashbacks that tell the story. It had great action scenes, including a lot more martial arts than was once attributed to the Highlander series or movies. It also had a decent(yet far from stellar) plot line. Oh, and Methos made a cameo.

What I didn't like about it was that it was a bit too inconsistent with the story up to that point. In the series, Duncan and Connor are related, but not immediate family. In the movie, they are brothers. The watchers play too little of a role in the story, unlike the series where there's a lot of interaction(though forbidden). As I said I liked the plot, it did leave a lot to be desired. They could have tied things together better, and come up with some more fluid transitions.

Conclusion: 7.0/10.0. All in all, I found the movie entertaining. It's not for everyone, especially the die hard fans of the first of the series. Casual fans, or newcomers to the series or movies will enjoy it, however. It did leave an opening for the continuation of the franchise, but it also could be the last one made without leaving people hanging. It's got an "R" rating for violence and brief nudity, so be sure that you're with the kids if they want to see it.
