Weekend Top Ten Box Office Films

Scary Movie 3, the latest in the hit horror/spoof series, earned $49.7 million over this weekend, breaking the October release record set last year with Red Dragon. This weekend's other new release, Radio opened with in 3rd place with $14 million.

Quentin Tarantino's bloody kung-fu flick killed the competition and opened as the weekend's top movie with an estimated $22.6 million making it the fourth-best October opener ever. The Coen's Intolerable Cruelty opened in 3rd with $13.1 million.

Directors Ask MPAA to Repeal Screener Ban

Spike Jonze, Martin Scorsese, Sofia and Francis Ford Coppola and Robert Redford are among the 142 directors urging Jack Valenti of the MPAA to repeal the recent screener ban, which gives the 5,600 Academy Awards voters no choice but to catch most movies in theaters. This unfairly disadvantages independent films that usually have a limited showing.

The Rock's new action comedy The Rundown debuted as the weekend's top movie by earning $18.5 million. Under the Tuscan Sun opened in second place with $9.41 million. The weekend's other new wide release -- Danny DeVito directed black comedy Duplex -- debuted with $4.4 million.
